The vision and work of Royal Ambassadors began in the United States of America in 1908, originating within the Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through the dedicated missionary activity of the SBC, the movement arrived in Nigeria in the 1920s as one of the world's foremost organisations for boys.
In its early years in Nigeria, the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) sponsored and nurtured the organisation. By 1954, it was proposed that the men of the Nigerian Baptist Convention should assume leadership of the boys' work. This led to the formation of the Men and Boys' Department in 1961, which subsequently evolved into the Missionary Organizations Department (since 1998).
The Royal Ambassadors of Nigeria (RAN) now spans all Baptist associations, conferences, and the Convention nationally — and its influence extends across West Africa, with Nigeria providing continental leadership. Two All-African Royal Ambassadors Summits have been hosted in Nigeria (2007 and 2010), with Molete Baptist Church, Ibadan hosting the landmark 2010 summit.
The emblem is a blue shield on a white circle with a gold edge. The shield — representing a soldier of Christ (Ephesians 6:16) — is divided into three parts:
The Torch (Junior RA, ages 10–15): The light of learning and faith as one begins the journey of becoming an ambassador for Christ.
The Wheel (Intermediate RA, ages 16–25): Movement and progress — calling the member to pattern his life after the Carpenter Boy of Nazareth.
The Crown (Senior RA, ages 26–35): Representing Christ as King of kings — the Senior RA is qualified to serve effectively as His Ambassador.

Although the Royal Ambassadors ministry had existed informally within Molete Baptist Church prior to 1979, its formal organisation commenced with the inauguration of the Revd I. A. Ojo Chapter in 1979. This milestone marked the beginning of a structured ministry that would grow into one of the most influential Royal Ambassadors chapters in the Nigerian Baptist Convention.
The inauguration was facilitated by Revd Dr S. O. Olaniyan, Director of the Boys' and Men's Department of the NBC. Among the pioneer members were Ambassador (now Bishop) John Abioye Oyetunji, Ambassador Gabriel Oke, Late Ambassador Adekunle Francis Moronfoye, Late Revd Matthew Alagbe, Ambassador H. A. Ogunsanya, and Ambassador (now Deacon) S. B. Fehintola.
Under the pioneer leadership of Ambassador John A. Oyetunji, the organisation established structures promoting discipline, Christian character, and effective leadership. The administration made its mark through evangelism, drama ministry, and missions — contributing to the establishment of the RA organisation at First Baptist Church, Olupona, Osun State.
As membership grew, two additional chapters were established: the Late Revd I. O. Owoeye Chapter and the Deacon G. O. Olaosegba Chapter, growing the organisation to three chapters.
Late Ambassador Adekunle Francis Moronfoye, one of the organisation's founding members, assumed leadership in 1983. Widely admired for his dedication, humility, and passion for youth development, his tenure saw the organisation flourish spiritually while strengthening its administrative structures.
One of the most significant milestones was the donation of the organisation's first musical band by Late Pa J. A. Wojuola, the Patron. This gift marked the beginning of a rich musical tradition. Ambassador Moronfoye served faithfully until his passing in December 1989. In recognition of his exceptional service, the Ona Iye Baptist Association instituted the Late Ambassador Kunle Moronfoye Bible Competition in his honour.
Following Ambassador Moronfoye's passing in December 1989, leadership passed to Ambassador (now Pastor) Kunle Fadiji, who ensured a smooth transition. Many regard Pastor Fadiji as the architect of the modern Royal Ambassadors movement within Molete Baptist Church.
A defining achievement was establishing a strong relationship between the Royal Ambassadors and the Lydia Auxiliary — a partnership whose legacy continues. He also encouraged active participation in RA camps across South-Western Nigeria.
Ambassador Deola Falade assumed office in January 1996, ensuring continuity in the programmes and traditions established by his predecessors. His administration maintained organisational stability and provided a seamless transition for the organisation.
In January 1998, Ambassador (now Pastor) Lere Ajiboye was appointed Leader. He focused on promoting unity, harmony, and collective purpose. His inclusive leadership style fostered an atmosphere of cooperation that prepared the organisation for one of its most transformative periods.
The appointment of Dr Richard Abayomi Aborisade at the beginning of 2001 marked one of the most transformative periods in the organisation's history. With visionary leadership and purposeful innovation, he laid the foundation for many structures and programmes that continue to define the organisation today.
The chapter system was expanded from three to five with the addition of the Late Deacon Wilson Fadulu Chapter and the Late Pa Solomon Afolabi Adika Chapter.
Ambassador Akin Oyeleye assumed office in July 2006, ushering in an era characterised by expansion, infrastructural development, and stronger organisational partnerships. The Revd Edward Kehinde Alabi Chapter was inaugurated, increasing chapters to six.
New educational programmes included the Late Pa Kilanko Alabi Essay Competition and the Late Mrs Elizabeth Jenfa Scholarship Scheme — the first scholarship scheme for tertiary education.
Following Ambassador Oyeleye's tenure, leadership passed to Ambassador Olaoye Fadiji. Although his administration was tragically cut short by his untimely passing in 2014, he maintained the organisation's commitment to discipleship, discipline, and service.
Counsellor Opeyemi Fehintola assumed leadership, assisted by Counsellors Korede Bamitale and Segun Dairo. His administration was marked by strategic consolidation, leadership development, and renewed emphasis on missions. The Late Counsellor Olaoye Fadiji Chapter was inaugurated, bringing the total number of chapters to seven.
His remarkable achievements earned him a second term in office, completing his administration on 7 July 2019.
On 7 July 2019, Counsellor Segun Dairo succeeded Counsellor Opeyemi Fehintola as Leader. His administration focused on expanding the organisation's influence beyond the local church, increasing its visibility at Association, Conference, and National levels. Counsellor Dairo handed over leadership on 7 July 2024 to Ambassador David Olaniyan.
The current administration is led by Ambassador David Olaniyan, supported by Counsellor Tobi Ogundele, Ambassador Iyanu Ajiboye, and Ambassador Adedotun Amoo. Building upon more than four decades of faithful service, the current leadership remains committed to preserving the rich heritage while embracing innovation, excellence, and greater opportunities for missions, leadership development, discipleship, and community impact.
